Benton Murdoch Spruance

American printmaker
June 25, 1904–December 6, 1967

Spruance was born and died in Philadelphia. He was a long-term faculty member and Chairman of the Arts Department at Beaver College in Jenkintown, PA, as well as Chairman of the Printmaking Department of the Philadelphia College of Art.

As a printmaker, Spruance was known for his innovations in color lithography with series of works relating to mythological and religious themes, as well as portraiture.

The Prints

Benton Spruance bequeathed a large collection of his lithographs to his nephews. This site serves to present some of these prints for sale, all of which have been well maintained over the years. The photos and descriptions for each print reveal any idiosyncrasies. Please feel free to contact us with further questions.
